Having free time was just way too overwhelming for me, so in July of 2015, I started my new venture. Hendren Branding.
I was fortunate enough to get some media attention with Tech Gone Wild and my story, and because of that, I was contacted by a company asking for help with their branding and growth. I was honored that someone wanted to pay me for my experience and opinion!
We talked on the phone for a little while and I learned about their idea and goals for it. I saw where they needed help and support, and then whipped up a presentation. Later that week they flew me out to LA.
Normally, meeting new people doesn’t faze me, but this was different. Because they we paying me for my support and opinions I felt such a large amount of pressure to impress.
When I arrived at their office, there were three younger guys, all eager to see what I had prepared. After some small chit chat, we sat down and I started going through my presentation.
It was crazy to see that one of the guys was taking notes and the other two were listening intently, like I was about to give them the winning lottery numbers. Once I had finished up, they had a ton of questions. After answering all of their questions – and talking about how busy LAX always is – I started to pack up my stuff and next thing I know, they are telling me what they want to go over next time.
I tried to act like I assumed we would be meeting again, although I’m sure my surprised facial expression gave that one away. They told me they would shoot me an email for when they would like to meet again and include the topics for our next meeting.
During the flight back I kept replaying that in my mind wondering how that went so well, and wondering how I am supposed to top that!
Once we landed and I received cell service again, I saw they had already emailed me wanting to meet again in two weeks!
When I got home, I started researching “Branding and Marketing consulting firms”, and to my surprise, most charged about $800 an hour + travel expenses.
Ladies and gentleman, Hendren Branding was born!
I knew I couldn’t charge what they did, as I am only a freshman in college and have virtually no consulting experience, so I slid right in at the $349 an hour mark (plus travel, of course) and started grinding.
I now have clients in LA, Seattle, Las Vegas, and New York City and have two contractual consulting agreements with companies in LA and Las Vegas. Two of my current clients were referrals from my existing clients.
Because I am a full-time student at Arizona State University, as you could imagine, traveling is tough to do during the week. I generally am traveling somewhere once a week, so I am fortunate to be living right next to the airport.
If I’m going to LA I’ll wake up at 7 with a flight at 8:30, arrive at 9:30, finishing consulting at 11:30, flight back at 12:30, and next thing you know I’m sitting in my 2:30 Philosophy Lecture. For my New York client, however, that requires a weekend trip, so I leave Friday night and I’m back by Saturday evening.
I have learned that I truly do have a passion for consulting and meeting new people, and Hendren Branding is an amazing way to do such a thing.
We are growing as quickly as we can – (I’m pretty limited to locations I can fly to and back within a few hours haha.)
So ya, that’s what I’m up to now. I’ll do my very best to keep this page updated so keep checking back.
